A leader in developing fabricated plastic components, Iplex (Crane Group) chose Speedshield to help improve safety at its plant operations. Challenge: IPLEX needed to address some common workplace safety issues, such as the improper use of safety restraints and, more specifically, forklift speeds when tynes were raised. The company also wanted to reduce the time and money spent on vehicle repairs and maintenance. Solution: IPLEX used Speedshield’s Speed and Acceleration System, the Logic Based Driver Restraints System, Transmission Control, and Lift Height Speed Control for an integrated safety solution. Results: Our integrated solution ensured that vehicles couldn’t exceed a speed limit within specific zones and ensured every driver used safety belts correctly. Vehicle transmissions were prevented from going forward or reverse while traveling in the wrong direction, adding another layer of safety and reducing wear and tear. Speedshield’s solution also issued a warning when vehicles were operating with tynes raised.
Dana Australia
Mobility solutions manufacturer Dana needed an innovative solution to control forklift speeds and ensure driver seatbelt usage within their mobile plant operations. Challenge: As part of Dana’s ongoing goal of reducing potential accidents and improving safety on-site, Dana needed a sound solution to reduce the maximum forklift speed and ensure strict adherence to seatbelt protocols. Solution: Speedshield Technologies implemented two specialized solutions to address Dana’s safety challenges. The Speed and Acceleration Control system ensured a maximum vehicle speed was set across Dana’s fleet of forklifts. In contrast, the Logic Based Driver Restraint system ensured drivers used vehicle seatbelts correctly. Results: By implementing our solutions, users can access a sophisticated system that leverages seat, seatbelt, and handbrake interlocks to trigger alarms and initiate automatic vehicle shutdown. Melbourne Market Authority
Melbourne is known for its many famous markets. However, their popularity has given the Melbourne Market Authority a headache due to increasing safety concerns. Challenge: With thousands of shoppers in relatively small spaces, the Melbourne Market Authority recognized the need to restrict forklift speed, especially during trading periods. It was clear that multiple maximum speed zones were required, and these needed to be adjustable by operating period as well. Two-speed zones (indoor and outdoor) and three operating periods (pre-trading, trading, and post-trading) were identified. Solution: A single forklift trial commenced using Speedshield Zone-Based Speed Control with zone definition based on GPS. Results: Using Speedshield Technologies' web-based Reporting and Control portal, Speedshield OptiX; the MMA can analyze the data and adjust the maximum speeds based on the period.Upon satisfactory trial completion, the MMA plans to install Speedshield Technologies on all on-site forklifts.

General Motors Port Melbourne Plant needed a total safety solution for its plant and on-site fleet, including forklifts and Taylor Dunn buggies. Challenge: General Motors' management recognized that safety needed to improve at its Port Melbourne Plant. It also recognized the role that Industrial IoT technology could play in achieving this, so it turned to Speedshield Technologies for a comprehensive, integrated solution. Solution: The Speedshield Industrial Safety System was fitted to all forklifts and Taylor Dunn buggies. Specializing in refractory lining, slag, and scale build-up removal services, KT-Grant navigates the challenges of operating specialist equipment in some of the harshest environments known to man - extreme heat. Challenge: KT-Grant’s existing safety infrastructure needed to address the unique challenges posed by its specialized equipment and high-temperature operations. Creating a customized safety solution capable of withstanding the intense heat became paramount. “The collaborative journey with Speedshield Technologies has been truly remarkable. A custom-designed 4-camera audio and visual alert system with aluminum housing and a sapphire crystal glass front was implemented. Moreover, 30-ft cables were specially wrapped in a fire sleeve made from silicon and fiberglass, ensuring resilience in the face of extreme temperatures. Speedshield Technologies is also pioneering an integrated system with a switch to reset button, ultimately transitioning to a wireless setup for heightened flexibility. Results: The integration of Speedshield Technologies' customized AiVA safety solution introduced an innovative layer of safety for KT-Grant in its challenging operational environment. Both pedestrians and operators, often up to 35 feet away or on nearby mezzanine levels, now benefit from AiVA’s speed-liming and deactivation features. Fosters sought to improve safety practices at two of its large winery sites. Challenge: Fosters wanted to improve workplace safety by setting a maximum speed limit on-site and enforcing the use of driver restraints. The company also wanted to use transmission control to protect vehicles and reduce maintenance and repair costs. Solution: Speedshield Speed and Acceleration Control, Logic Based Driver Restraints, and Transmission Control were all used to improve safety compliance. Results: Fosters' partnership with Speedshield Technologies reduced the risk of potential employee accidents and lowered maintenance and repair costs for its forklifts.

Alcan
Alcan engaged Speedshield Technologies to cap vehicle speeds in two of its cable engineering plants and enforce seatbelt compliance among operators. Challenge: Alcan required a solution to control forklift speed across different areas of its factories. The company also wanted 100% seatbelt compliance for all its forklift operators. With over ten forklifts in heavy-duty, congested industrial sites, controlled speeds, and driver compliance are critical to safety. Solution: Alcan began by implementing two Speedshield SSV Speed Control units at its Roseburg plant. This controlled travel speeds on its Hyster 5-tonne forklifts to a maximum of 5mph indoors and 9mph outdoors when doing the longer building-to-building runs. Results: This improved safety still allowed vehicle movements to be efficient in less congested areas. The electronic sensors for the vehicle’s seatbelt saw 100% compliance. Subsequently, Alcan has installed three more units at Roseburg. Its Sedalia Missouri plant has since put its first three units in service.

Our solutions were installed to regulate the maximum vehicle speed on-site, ensuring safer forklift operations. The company also implemented Speedshield Technologies' Logic-Based Driver Restraint and Driver Authorization system, which combines seat, seatbelt, and handbrake interlocks to trigger alarms and automatically power down the vehicle if operators fail to engage or disengage the interlocks correctly. Chiquita Mushrooms needed to address safety issues around its mobile plant. Challenge: Chiquita Mushrooms’ plant faced challenges related to speeding forklifts, the inappropriate use of safety restraints, and unauthorized vehicle access. Additionally, unsafe driving practices caused avoidable repairs and tire wear. Our zone-based Speed & Acceleration Control system was implemented to provide up to 3 differing maximum speeds per site, ensuring forklifts were traveling at safe and appropriate speeds in various warehouse areas. Results: Forklifts at CHEP warehouses now travel at safe and appropriate speeds across different areas. Other vehicles now limit their speed depending on whether the vehicle is traveling with the tyne raised. Speedshield Technologies' solution ensures forklifts automatically operate at the correct speed, depending on the situation. Additionally, Speedshield Technologies Transmission Control protects the vehicle’s transmission from being forced into forward or reverse while traveling in the opposite direction, and the Logic Based Driver Restraints ensure safety restraints are always used correctly.

REQUIREMENT: To increase safety and reduce risk of injury, by ensuring seat belts are worn, by controlling authorized drivers only access to vehicles and by setting maximum speeds by zone within warehouses. Additionally to check vehicle conditions prior to start-up. SOLUTION: Speedshield Logic Based Driver Restraints and Driver Verification Speedshield RFID Zoned Speed Control and Alarms Speedshield Reporting and Control Module Speedshield Vehicle Monitor with Prestart Checklist DETAILS: Amcor has a major focus on safety in the workplace and thus is continuing to install Speedshield across many sites, to address forklift safety and vehicle care issues. The following have been implemented in varying degrees across the sites thus far: Speedshield Smart Card Driver verification was implemented due to problems with unauthorized personnel operating vehicles. The Speedshield system additionally integrates with the current payroll cards in use. To enforce drivers to use the safety restraints provided in an appropriate manner e.g. seatbelts, the Speedshield Logic Based Driver Restraints capability has been installed which ensures the driver correctly starts the forklift by sitting on the vehicle, engaging the seatbelt and swiping his identification card/tag before starting. This capability also controls vehicle alarms and power down should the operator alight from the vehicle. Speedshield zone based speed control has been implemented to provide differing maximum speeds, to ensure forklifts are traveling at safe and appropriate speeds in different areas, depending on varying levels of traffic and pedestrian activity. On some sites Speedshield is also triggering alarms to sound for vehicles traveling through doorways. The Speedshield web based Reporting and Control module provides an easy to use central control of driver authorizations and vehicle access and setting of other Speedshield parameters. Amcor have also fitted the Speedshield Vehicle Monitor Display unit for providing a customized pre start checklist as well as speed, weight and tilt displays.

REQUIREMENT: CHEP had a requirement to reduce injuries and damage from forklift operation and to protect the mobile equipment assets from inappropriate use. CHEP’s pallet refurbishment and storage warehouses are a very rugged environment in which forklifts operate in relatively tough conditions. In order to reduce risk of injury to employees, CHEP undertook to implement a traffic management scheme incorporating various speed control mechanisms, transmission control and enforced driver restraints. SOLUTION: Speedshield Logic Based Driver Restraints Speedshield RFID Zoned Speed Control Speedshield Transmission Control Speedshield Lift Height Speed Control DETAILS: Speedshield zone based speed control has been implemented to provide up to 3 differing maximum speeds per site, ensuring forklifts are traveling at safe and appropriate speeds in different warehouse areas. Additionally some vehicles are fitted with lift height speed control to limit their speed depending on whether the vehicle is traveling with the tyne raised. Speedshield ensures forklifts operate to the lower of the tyne height speed control or the zone speed control where relevant. CHEP has implemented Speedshield Transmission Control which protects the vehicle transmission from being forced into forward or reverse whilst traveling in the opposite direction. This has provided an additional benefit in reduced tire wear. CHEP via Speedshield’s Logic Based Driver Restraints is able to enforce drivers to use the safety restraints in the correct and appropriate manner. In order to start the vehicle drivers must follow the procedure of sitting on the vehicle, engage the seatbelt and swipe the identification card/tag.

Visy had safety issues with forklift speed at a number of sites which required the ability to set the maximum speed in single or multiple zones while also ensuring that drivers were using restraints and that only authorized drivers could operate specific vehicles. Challenge: With various operational needs across locations Australia-wide, different Visy sites have varying speed and acceleration control requirements. The challenge was to implement new systems without disruption and with immediate effect. Solution: Speedshield Technologies' Speed and Acceleration Control, RFID Zone-Based Speed Control, Logic-Based Driver Restraints, and Driver Authorization and Transmission Control are all integrated seamlessly to improve safety compliance. Results: Once put into operation, Speedshield Technologies' solutions ensured that approved drivers only operated forklifts and vehicle speeds were controlled. Furthermore, the solution only allowed drivers to use seatbelts correctly. Combinations of seat, seatbelt, and handbrake interlocks were used to set alarms and power down should the operator not engage or disengage the interlocks in the correct order. The solution also protected vehicle transmissions from being forced forward or reverse when traveling in the opposite direction.

Woolworths
Challenge: Woolworths needed to elevate the safety measures at its new distribution center to prevent collisions and incidents in a high-traffic environment. However, it needed to do this without affecting ‘put away’ and ‘picking’ efficiency. Solution: RFID technology was used to establish Zoned Speed Control with the Speedshield Reporting and Control Module. To minimize safety hazards from the growth of activity and pedestrian volumes on site, we installed technology to centrally limit the speed of forklifts. The Speedshield Reporting and Control Module enabled management, as required, to centrally change vehicle speed limits by zone and, where necessary, to restrict individual forklifts from operating in specific zones entirely. This module also provides vehicle and operator usage and performance reports for analysis. Results: Woolworths and Speedshield Technologies implemented a safe traffic management strategy that incorporated reduced vehicle speed in high pedestrian areas while also being able to actively control different maximum speed limits for different types of equipment across defined areas of the Distribution Centre (DC).

North Star BlueScope Steel in the US needed to address critical safety issues with forklift speeds on-site. Challenge: North Star was required to introduce maximum forklift speeds in different zones of its warehouse, indoors and outdoors. This included high-traffic pedestrian areas where workers were at risk of vehicle collisions. Solution: To enable North Star to introduce different maximum forklift speeds in different zones, Speedshield Technologies GPS Zoned Speed Control and Alarms were installed to control a vehicle’s maximum speed by zones as mapped by GPS. Results: Speedshield Technologies solutions transformed safety compliance on-site, improving seatbelt usage, driver authorization, vehicle access and ensuring forklift safety procedures were followed. In high pedestrian areas, alarms now sound whenever the forklift is in motion indoors and in some outdoor regions. In areas not usually allowing pedestrians, the alarm is restricted to sound only when vehicles are reversing, reducing the risk of collision.

Challenge: After introducing variable speed zones in its warehouse, Nestle was struggling to control forklift speed across the different zones. Additionally, driver restraint usage and compliance needed to improve. Solution: Speedshield Technologies RF Zoned Speed Control system, Logic based Driver Interlocks/Restraints, and Transmission Control were all implemented to improve safety in a complex warehouse environment. Results: These combined solutions created a safer work environment by always ensuring the correct use of seatbelts and the following of forklift safety procedures. PBR
PBR International is a leading designer and manufacturer of innovative brake and clutch products. Surprisingly, the company encountered an issue with its forklifts traveling at unsafe speeds, compromising safety. Challenge: PBR had issues with controlling forklift speed when the tynes were elevated. It needed to control this by implementing specific zones within its operations depending on tyne height, the zone where the vehicle was operating, and the varying maximum speeds required. Solution: Speedshield Technologies deployed its Lift Height Speed Control and RFID Zone Identification solutions. Results: PBR sets the forklifts' maximum speed based on the lower maximum speed of the area in which they were operating and the maximum speed of the tyne height. By enforcing speed limits in line with safe operating procedures in a variable speed zone, it created a seamless workflow that improved productivity, efficiency, and workplace safety.

Learn how we helped Star Track Express enhance safety at its major parcel handling centers by addressing forklift speed, driver restraint usage, and forklift maintenance. Challenge: Smorgon Steel needed to ensure that the staff vehicle was limited to traveling at 15 km/hr on-site and prevented from being driven off-site. Additionally, the vehicle needed to sound a warning alarm whenever it entered a dangerous part of the site. Solution: Speedshield Technologies GPS Zoned Speed Control (featuring speed limiting for two maximum speeds) solution was installed on the vehicle, which allowed its speed to be limited and controlled on-site. This product was also installed to control the speeds of their Front-End Loaders and 16tonne Forklifts. Results: By implementing speed controls on the staff vehicles, Smorgon Steel prevented staff vehicles and heavy equipment from traveling at unsafe speeds, protecting workers from possible collisions and injury.

When it came time to renew its fleet of material handling equipment across Australia, Qantas Freight needed to improve its risk profile and ensure it met and exceeded safety targets. Challenge: Qantas Freight is an industry leader in OH&S and wanted to elevate the rate of safety compliance across its workforce. This included increasing seatbelt use, ensuring licensed and authorized equipment operations, and implementing equipment speed and damage control across its fleet. Solution: Speedshield’s OptiX system provided Qantas Freight with a fully integrated driver verification system using the Aviation Security Identification Card (‘ASIC’) card required by Airport Authorities. It adheres to the tight security framework that governs the ASIC card and the use of Qantas Freight’s fleet. Vehicle speed is intelligently controlled by RFID zone control, using smart tags embedded in the tarmac. Impact detection was installed on all equipment so incidents could be immediately investigated. Results: Speedshield OptiX strengthened processes and helped identify training requirements within the operating group. This increased the accountability of individual equipment operators, which improved compliance and created a safer working environment for all employees.
