Qantas Freight

Qantas Freight are a leader in advancing occupational health and safety in their workplaces, and when it came time to renew their fleet of material handling equipment across Australia, Speedshield was there to supply them the most advanced safety system to meet their expectations.

Items such as enforcing seatbelt usage, ensuring licensed and authorised operations of their fleet, speed control and damage reduction were at the top of their list, and Speedshield brought the technologies they needed to vastly improve their Fleet risk profile and ensure they not only met but exceeded their targets.

The Speedshield Fleet Online system provides Qantas with a fully integrated driver verification system, utilising the ASIC card required by Airport Authorities for workers in the Freight environment.

This not only efficiently utilises one access system for site and equipment, but ensures the tight security framework that governs the ASIC card also governs the use of their fleet.

Further controls allow Qantas to specifically select equipment for certain operators, from 16T forklift to rail mounted Load Transfer Vehicles.

The Fleet Online system also provides intelligent driver restraint interlocks to ensure the seatbelt is worn at all times on site.

This ensures that in the event of an incident, the operator is harnessed within the safe zone of the forklift ROPS (Roll over Protection System).

Their Pre-Operational Safety Checklist is now paperless, and the system ensures it is always completed prior to operation of the equipment, daily or by shift. Any items noted as faulty are automatically emailed to site maintenance for immediate attention, and the checklist is capable of disabling a machine for inspection by mechanics if certain questions are listed as faulty.

Speed is intelligently controlled by RFID zone control, utilising smart tags embedded in the tarmac. Vehicles operating in certain zones are limited to the speed decided in the Qantas risk assessments, meaning warehousing areas with high vehicle to vehicle density travel as slowly as 5kph maximum, while in other less dense areas, the units are able to travel at higher speeds.

Impact detection on all equipment means any incidents can be immediately investigated, providing valuable information on which to improve processes and understand training requirements within the operating group. Further accountability of operators has seen a huge decrease in avoidable damage to product and infrastructure, ensuring the adage a safe workplace is a profitable workplace holds true. Date and time information from the impact reports also allows the further use of CCTV footage to further investigate such incidents.

All the information gathered by the Fleet Online system is collated and sent back to an advanced Online Dashboard, which displays all the key data in easy to view graphical charts. Any issues are easily identified through the front screen, and intuitive drill downs allow particular incidents, drivers or vehicles to be investigated further with the click of a button. All reports are downloadable and are available for the life of the equipment, providing valuable historical data for benchmarking. Automatic emails for all or selected events are able to be sent instantaneously to stakeholders to ensure proactive and immediate responses.
